Maryline Nakache made us dream during the 2023 Marathon des Sables! For her first participation, she won the women's general classification in dazzling fashion
This 38th edition saw record temperatures, less than 10% humidity, and nearly 30% dropout rates! A look back at his conquest of the desert...
Annabelle : How did you get started with trail running?
Maryline : I've always done a lot of sport, I can't stay still and I don't know how to rest. I've tried a bit of everything without ever really finding what suited me. I started running with my colleagues at work almost 7 years ago, firstly for short distances on the road, then on slightly hillier paths, then in the mountains... And I was immediately taken with it! At the same time, whatever I do, I have to be fully committed, whether it's sport, music or studies!
Annabelle : You explain that it's the toughest and most beautiful race you've ever experienced. And you win it! For your first participation! Did you imagine this? How did you prepare for the heat/sand?
Maryline : No, I hadn't imagined at all that I would win the race. Crossing the desert is a dream I've had since I was little. My main goal was to finish the race, live my dream, but also to surpass myself. I had never done this type of race completely independently! Regarding my preparation, I went for 15 days in the Camargue with my van. I tested the fully loaded bag, the gaiters, and I went on long outings on the Espiguette beach which is immense! I had a blast!
Annabelle : What was the most difficult part of this race?
Maryline : The heat!!! I didn't expect such high temperatures (in fact, no one did!). We had up to 50°C at each stage! Even at night, the temperatures didn't drop much.... And the water we drank was always hot!
Annabelle : Do you have an anecdote to share with us?
Maryline : One of my favorite moments was when the sun set in the dunes during the long stage. The colors were magical... Then, I loved running at night in the desert with my headlamp on. It was cooler, I was alone in my bubble, and the kilometers went by more quickly.
Annabelle : You're talking about your headlamp, what does your Go'Lum bring you?
Maryline : This headlamp has been following me everywhere for a few years! It has its own little place in my van :)
I can trust my Go'Lum , it is light, durable and has very good battery life!
It served me well during the MDS, whether at the bivouac in the evening, or during the long stage!
Annabelle : What are your next goals?
Maryline : I love varying the types of races throughout the year! My next goal will be in Italy at the end of June, with the Lavaredo ultra trail. Then, if all goes well, I'll do the TDS at the end of August!
For the end of the season, I'm still hesitating, everything will depend on my fitness, my desires and the opportunities!
